Asylum is offered to people fleeing their native country due to violence and persecution. The United States provides asylum protection to these families and individuals, allowing them to stay and work.
Asylum is granted if the individual or their family was harmed or in danger of being harmed because of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or part of a particular social group.
Depending on their circumstances, different types of asylum and humanitarian visas are available.
- Asylum
- Temporary Protected Status
- U Visa – Victims of Criminal Activity
- T Visa – Victims of Human Trafficking
- Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
Michael Piri – Asylum Lawyer
For some immigrants, the United States is more than just a land of opportunity. It represents freedom from persecution. At The Piri Law Firm in Dallas, Texas, we help clients in the important and sometimes life-saving process of applying for asylum.
Clients have come to me after fleeing their countries based on a political situation. Others are persecuted because of their race, religion, nationality, or membership in a social group.
Many illegal aliens caught in the country or at the border and arrested will request a filing for asylum. These cases present challenges and eligibility for asylum is not guaranteed. An experienced immigration lawyer can help you escape the persecution you face in your home country.
Upon meeting with you at The Piri Law Firm, we will discuss your eligibility for asylum and file an affirmative asylum application with the appropriate asylum office to appear before an administrative judge. If removal proceedings have started, your asylum application would be determined by an immigration judge.

Asylum and Refugee Status
If your application is granted, there is an additional benefit to asylum status or refugee status. You are able to file applications for your spouse and children to join you in the United States. After one year in asylum status, you are eligible for lawful permanent residence.
Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a designation by the Secretary of Homeland Security for countries that experience various conditions that prevent the country’s nationals from returning safely. These include:
- Armed conflict such as civil war
- Environment disasters
- Other extraordinary and temporary conditions
To be eligible for TPS, you must:
- Be a TPS designated country national or an individual without nationality who previously resided in the designated country.
- File during open registration or re-registration.
- Have been continuously physically present in the U.S. since the effective date of the most recent designation of your country.
- Have been continuously residing in the U.S. since the date specified for your country.

If you wish to register or re-register for TPS but still have questions, or you’ve missed important deadlines for registration, reach out to an immigration attorney who can help you navigate the TPS process. Be wary of scams that try to take advantage of individuals with promises of filing your application for you and then charging you large sums of money.
Our experienced immigration lawyers can provide you representation before the Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals for various types of relief, including:
- Cancellation of removal
- Adjustment of status
- Bond
- Prosecutorial discretion
- Motions to reopen and reconsider
